St Philip’s 1-2 St Stephen’s

Friday evening’s match began with great promise for St Philip’s with some early attacks on the right leading to a corner. Finley whipped in the ball which was met at the near post by Oliver: 1-0 St Philip’s. However, after hesitation on the left-hand side, St Stephen’s sliced through the St Philip’s defence. Although the chance was scorned it promised more danger thereafter, and after another missed opportunity to clear, St Stephen’s equalised, the ball being forced through the goalkeeper’s legs.

Just before half time, St Philip’s had the chance to restore their lead: Oliver being tripped in the area. After some time, the penalty was taken; however, the shot cleared the bar, and the score remained level at half time. 1-1.

Soon after the restart and St Philip’s trailed. While Otto made a great effort to save a powerful shot from the St Stephen’s attacker, he was helpless to prevent the rebound going in and from then on it was an uphill struggle for the home team.

Special mention should go to Mason who defended with courage, and Otto too, whose brave goalkeeping kept St Stephen’s at bay numerous times. But St Philip’s failed to create many clear-cut chances in the second half, bar a volley from Bruno which went narrowly wide, and the team from Odd Down could not complain about the full-time score.
