WASPS 3-5 St Philip’s
The girls’ first game of the season was in the cup on a wet Monday afternoon in mid-October. It all started with a mistake, the ball spilling over the goalkeeper’s hands meaning St Philip’s trailed after only a minute.
But then came the St Philip’s attack: Rose fed Alice the ball on the right and after progressing towards goal, Alicer struck a powerful shot which could only be parried into the net. More joy was to follow for St Philip’s: Alice struck home again, and now they led.
Despite a neatly worked equaliser, St Philip’s dominated the remainder of the first half: Rose striking a volley for 3-2 before Alice scored once more. Half time: 4-2 to St Philip’s.
The second half began with a glorious defensive run from Rose, who ran half the pitch to prevent an almost certain goal for WASPS. After Isabella saved bravely from point-blank range, came the goal of the game. The ball fell kindly for Alice, a full 20 metres out; she took aim and the ball crashed in off the under-side of the bar: 5-2!
There was just time for a consolation goal for WASPS, but the result was never in doubt, St Philip’s being worthy winners! We await our next opponents in the cup!
